Executive headshots in Portland: the portrait that goes with your name
An executive headshot travels further than any other photo in the company: the leadership page, the annual report, the conference program, the press release, the keynote slide, the board deck. This guide covers what a leadership portrait needs to communicate, what to wear, which looks hold up across all of those uses, how to get it done on an executive's calendar, and what it costs.

What is an executive headshot?
An executive headshot is a leadership portrait: a photo of a CEO, founder, partner, director or senior leader that will be used wherever the company needs a face next to a name. It is more considered than a standard staff headshot. The framing is often a little looser, the light has more shape, and the expression is calmer and more direct.
It also tends to come in a small set rather than a single frame: a tight crop for bios and press, a looser three-quarter version for the website and print, and sometimes a more editorial image for interviews and speaking pages.
What it needs to say
Competence and warmth at the same time. Investors, journalists, candidates and customers all read the leadership page, and the photo sets the tone before anyone reads the bio. Too stiff and the company looks old-fashioned; too casual and it looks unserious. The sweet spot is a direct, relaxed confidence that looks like someone who is good at their job and pleasant to be in a room with.
Consistency across the leadership team matters as much as any single portrait. A page where the CEO was shot in a studio, the CFO in a hotel lobby and the CTO on a phone tells its own story. We photograph leadership teams on one matched setup, in the studio or at your office, so the page reads as one company.
What to wear
- Wear what you would wear to meet your most important customer or investor. For most Portland executives that is a dark suit or blazer with or without a tie, or a structured jacket and simple top.
- Deep, solid colors: navy, charcoal, black, forest, burgundy. They photograph with weight and read as authority without shouting.
- Fit matters more than brand. Jackets that pull at the button or sleeves that bunch show in a tight crop. Have things pressed.
- Bring one alternative: a second jacket or a version without the tie. Companies often want a formal image for the annual report and a slightly more relaxed one for the website.
- Minimal accessories. A watch is fine. Skip lapel pins and loud ties unless they are part of your public identity.
Posing and expression
Leadership portraits are usually square or nearly square to the camera, chin level, shoulders relaxed, with an expression that is direct rather than beaming. A closed-mouth smile or a slight one usually works best; a full toothy smile can feel like sales rather than leadership. We shoot the full range so you can pick, and we coach every frame from behind the camera.
Busy executives often arrive straight from a meeting and want to be gone in twenty minutes. That is fine. Coached sessions with live review on a monitor are efficient precisely because there is no guessing; most executive sessions produce the final images in the first fifteen minutes.
Backgrounds and looks
A charcoal, deep gray or dark neutral background with shaped light is the classic executive look. It prints well, suits any brand and gives the portrait weight. Lighter neutrals work for companies with a brighter identity and are easier to match across a large leadership team.
For founders and executives who do a lot of speaking or press, an environmental version, shot in the office with the space softly out of focus, adds context and is a good fit for feature stories and conference programs.
How to prepare on a tight calendar
- Block thirty minutes, not fifteen. The session itself is fast, but arriving unhurried is worth more than any other preparation.
- Have an assistant send us the intended uses in advance: website, print, press, speaking. We will plan the crops and looks accordingly.
- Haircut a week before. Sleep the night before. Skip the early meeting if you can.
- Bring the jacket you want to be remembered in, pressed, on a hanger.
- If the leadership team is being photographed together, send us the existing page so we can match or deliberately refresh the style.
"I don't have time for this and I don't enjoy it."
Most executives don't. Sessions are built around that. We are set up and tested before you walk in, you are directed frame by frame, you review live and choose on the spot, and you can be back in the car in twenty minutes with the finals on the way within 48 hours. Many of our leadership clients had not updated their photo in a decade because they expected an ordeal; it is not one.
How much do executive headshots cost in Portland?
We quote every session individually rather than publishing a rate card, because no two people need the same thing. What you pay depends on what you need: a single current portrait for a bio or press use, or a formal and a relaxed look with tight and three-quarter crops.
Leadership teams and boards are quoted as a group, in the studio or on-site at your office, so every portrait matches. Every quote includes coaching, live review, professional retouching and 48-hour delivery in print resolution and web sizes. Tell us how many people, where they are and what the photos are for, and we will send a quote the same business day.
Frequently asked questions
Can you photograph our whole leadership team in one visit?
Yes. We schedule leaders back to back, ten to fifteen minutes each, on one matched setup in the studio or at your office, so the leadership page looks like one company.
Do you deliver print-quality files for annual reports?
Yes. Every selected image is delivered at full print resolution plus web sizes, retouched, within 48 hours.
Can you shoot at our office instead?
Yes. We bring a studio setup to your office or boardroom. This is common for executives with no time to travel and for matching a whole leadership team.
How long does the session take?
Most executive sessions are finished in twenty to thirty minutes even with two looks, because they are coached and reviewed live. There is no time limit if you want more.
What if I need the photos tomorrow?
Rush delivery is available. Tell us the deadline when you book and we will plan around it.
Can you match the style of our existing leadership photos?
Yes. Send us the current page and we will either match the background, light and crop or propose a refresh for the whole team.
